What Each Standard Actually Means
Compliance claims are only meaningful when you understand what they require. Here is what each standard on Scentia's label actually entails — in plain language.
🌿
IFRA
International Fragrance Association
The global industry body for fragrance safety. IFRA issues binding usage limits on over 1,200 fragrance ingredients based on independent toxicological research. Compliance means every ingredient in a Scentia oil is used within the safe concentration limits established through decades of scientific review. IFRA standards are updated continuously as new safety data becomes available — Scentia formulates to current IFRA standards.
🔬
RIFM
Research Institute for Fragrance Materials
The independent scientific body that conducts the safety research IFRA standards are based on. RIFM evaluates fragrance ingredients for skin sensitization, toxicological safety, environmental impact, and carcinogenicity. RIFM is funded by the fragrance industry but operates independently — its findings are peer-reviewed and published in scientific literature. When Scentia says RIFM certified, it means the ingredient selections are validated by this independent scientific process.
💨
CARB VOC Compliant
California Air Resources Board — Volatile Organic Compounds
CARB sets the strictest VOC emissions limits in the United States. Volatile organic compounds are chemicals that evaporate at room temperature and can contribute to indoor air quality concerns. CARB VOC compliance means Scentia fragrance oils emit VOCs within California's safe limits — the most rigorous standard in the country. Products compliant with CARB are compliant in all US states. This is the standard that matters most for a product you diffuse continuously in your home.
📋
TSCA Compliant
Toxic Substances Control Act
The US federal law governing the manufacture, import, and use of chemical substances. TSCA compliance confirms Scentia fragrance oils are formulated using substances approved for consumer use under US federal law — no restricted or prohibited chemicals are present in any formulation.
🚫
Phthalate-Free
No phthalates in any form
Phthalates are chemicals used in conventional fragrance as solvents and fixatives — they help scent molecules project and last longer. Certain phthalates (particularly DBP and DEHP) are classified as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with hormone function at sufficient exposure levels. Scentia fragrance oils contain no phthalates in any form. Alternative fixation strategies are used that do not carry the same endocrine-disruption concerns.
🚫
Paraben-Free
No parabens used as preservatives
Parabens are synthetic preservatives widely used in cosmetics and some fragrance formulations to extend shelf life. Research has raised concerns about parabens' potential to mimic estrogen and accumulate in body tissue. Scentia fragrance oils contain no parabens. The oils are formulated with natural antioxidant stability rather than synthetic paraben preservation.
🚫
Carcinogen-Free
No carcinogens per NTP, IARC & OSHA
Scentia fragrance oils contain no substances classified as carcinogens by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). These are the three primary scientific and regulatory bodies that classify carcinogenic risk in the United States and internationally.
Pet & Child Safety — Specific Guidance

Contains Soku lime and citrus top notes. Same guidance as Coastal for cats — ventilated spaces, standard intensity. |
The caution for cats with citrus-dominant oils is not a toxicity concern at normal diffusion levels — it is a sensitivity concern. Some cats are particularly sensitive to high concentrations of citrus terpenes (limonene, linalool) and may show discomfort in very small, unventilated rooms with diffusers running at high intensity. In normally ventilated spaces at standard or low settings, all Scentia oils are appropriate.
For young children, cold-air diffusion is inherently safer than candles or heated wax products because it produces no flame, no heat, and no combustion byproducts. Run at low intensity in the bedroom — our recommendation for children's rooms is the MiniPod at the lowest setting for 30 minutes before bedtime, then off through the night.
Manufacturing & Sourcing
All Scentia fragrance oils are sourced and bottled in Doral, Florida. Scentia's headquarters is in Miami, Florida. The oils are not imported, not rebottled from third-party wholesale, and not manufactured overseas.
The "made in the USA" designation is accurate and specific: raw aromatic materials are sourced from RIFM-approved suppliers, compounded at Scentia's Florida facility, and bottled in the same location from which all orders ship. The supply chain is short and controlled — which is a direct contributor to the consistency of safety and quality standards across every batch.
Scentia does not use water, glycol, or petroleum-derived carriers in any formulation. The oils are pure fragrance compound — no fillers, no extenders.
Cold Air Diffusion & Indoor Air Quality
Home fragrance is frequently cited in discussions of indoor air quality because many common products — candles, incense, plug-in air fresheners, wax melts — produce combustion byproducts, particulate matter, or VOCs at levels that can affect air quality over time.
Cold-air diffusion is fundamentally different from all of these. It produces:
✓
No combustion byproducts
No flame, no heating element. Nothing is burned. The oil is atomized by air pressure alone — the only thing released into the air is the fragrance nano-mist itself.
✓
No particulate matter from burning
Candles and incense release fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as a byproduct of combustion. These particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and are associated with respiratory irritation. Cold-air diffusion produces no PM2.5 from burning — the nano-mist particles are fragrance oil, not combustion carbon.
✓
No mould risk
Ultrasonic diffusers with water reservoirs can develop mould and bacteria if not cleaned rigorously — dispersing these into the air with the scent. Cold-air diffusers have no water reservoir. There is no standing water, no biological growth risk, and no mould dispersal.
✓
CARB-compliant VOC emissions
All fragrance oils emit some VOCs as part of their normal diffusion — that is how scent molecules reach your nose. Scentia oils emit VOCs within California's safe limits, which are the strictest in the US. At typical home diffusion rates and settings, the VOC contribution from a Scentia diffuser is well within accepted indoor air quality thresholds.
